Pokémon Go has been a consistent favorite for years, and anyone who knows me understands that I’m not particularly fond of the idea of “Game of the Year” lists. Frankly, I can’t even recall what I played back in January, and the number of games I play purely for fun, rather than work, can probably be counted on one hand. Even fewer make it onto the list of games I consistently return to.
This year, I’ve played a variety of games, including Monster Hunter Now, Neopets Faerie Fragments, Pokemon TCG Pocket, and Monument Valley 3. While they’ve all been enjoyable, they’re the type of games I tend to set aside the moment life gets busy.
However, when it comes to Pokemon Go, 2024 was an absolutely incredible year. Both globally and within our local community, the events Niantic hosted were exceptional. One major highlight was the way Niantic has been refining their Community Ambassador program, which launched last year. As an official ambassador for the Pokemon Go Harlow community, I’ve had the privilege of seeing our local group grow and thrive in ways I never imagined.

Strengthening Bonds Through Community and Contribution
One of the most rewarding aspects of this year was Niantic’s challenge to ambassadors to make a positive impact in their local areas. Our community embraced this challenge wholeheartedly, organizing litter cleanups and food bank donation drives. These efforts were paired with in-game rewards for those who participated, which only fueled the enthusiasm.
Beyond giving back, we’ve had countless moments of joy within the game itself. From battling in Raids to celebrating Shiny Pokemon catches and taking on Shadow Pokemon, every event has strengthened the bonds in our group. At one point, we hosted events for an incredible 10 consecutive days, bringing together trainers from all around the area.
The feeling of camaraderie is unlike anything else. Our Pokemon Go community has evolved into something much bigger than just a game; it’s a gathering of people who genuinely enjoy playing together.
Family Adventures Through Pokemon
On a personal level, Pokemon Go has also become a way to connect with my family. Amelia is an avid Pokemon Go player, while Robin has been diving into Dynamax Raids, which has added even more excitement to our shared adventures. Both of them are also building collections in Pokemon TCG Pocket, and it’s been wonderful bonding with younger family members through our shared love for the world of Pokemon.

Highlights from 2024 Events
One of the absolute highlights of my year was attending Pokemon Go events, particularly Go Fest Madrid. The energy at the event was electric, with trainers from all over the world coming together to share their love for the game. Walking through the bustling festival and seeing familiar faces from my local community there was nothing short of amazing.
Another standout experience was attending Pokemon Worlds in London. Although the event primarily focused on the Pokemon Trading Card Game, it also hosted Pokemon Go battles. Watching members of my local community go head-to-head with other trainers in intense battles was inspiring, and I couldn’t help but cheer them on every step of the way.
A Game That’s More Than Just a Game
For me, Pokemon Go has transcended the boundaries of being “just a game.” It’s become a platform for building friendships, strengthening community ties, and even creating family memories. It’s about sharing laughs while battling in Raids, celebrating those hard-earned Shiny catches, and working together to give back to the community.
Playing Pokemon Go has brought me closer to like-minded people who share my love for this game, and I couldn’t imagine a better way to spend my time. For that reason, Pokemon Go is more than deserving of a spot in my personal list of the most meaningful gaming experiences of 2024.
